Diversifying Course Materials: How Syllabi Express Values about Research Traditions and Authority

Wednesday, May 22, 2024 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

A core principle of inclusive teaching is that course materials should represent a diversity of lived experiences and traditions.  In this workshop, we’ll explore strategies for auditing your reading lists and associated assignments, so that you can evaluate the ways your reading lists might include or exclude different types of authors or views.  We’ll talk about different ways to think about diversity within a course, making explicit the often invisible ways in which reading and citation selections and practices can reinforce traditional hierarchies.  You’ll leave with strategies for finding diverse materials, publishers, and content, as well as pathways to deeper relationships with UVM Librarians.  Please bring a syllabus with you!
