Designing for Learning Kick-Off: Reducing Barriers to Student Success

January 9 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Designing for Learning, a cohort-based program, helps faculty reduce barriers to student success and create better opportunities for students to learn. It builds on research into how people learn, and practices for course design that engage students and focus on key course goals.  This program connects participants with colleagues, explores teaching resources, and fosters creative and compassionate teaching. Starting with a pre-semester kick-off and continuing with monthly meetings during the spring semester, participating faculty will focus on (re)designing a specific course.

Designing for Learning kicks off on January 9th with a day-long introduction to the program’s framework.  Participants will identify tentative goals for the semester and take away some small ideas for immediate use.  Monthly hour-long meetings during the semester will allow participants to share work-in-progress that supports student learning.  While specific areas of focus will evolve based on the group’s needs, we expect that topics for monthly meetings will include in-class activities, strategies for creating a sense of belonging, transparency in assessment and assignment design, and instructor as well as student well-being.

To register for the program, complete this form.  (We’ll schedule monthly, hour-long follow up meetings around participants’ schedules.) Applications are due by December 18th.

Designing for Learning is open to faculty of any rank across campus. Any questions?  Contact Holly.Parker@uvm.edu. For more information about the program, see our website.
