Learning In a Time of Generative AI
May 14 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
FreeThis event will be held in Innovation Hall, room E105
Facilitated by Peter Felten
How can we help students do the hard, and sometimes frustrating, work of learning when all around them AI’s champions are promising quick and easy – and well-written – answers to every question? The illusion of learning is only one click away. Why would anyone take the time and make the effort necessary to develop deep knowledge and expertise?
In this workshop, we’ll think together about how to help students commit to building their knowledge, skills, and capacities in our courses – with and without generative AI. You’ll work with colleagues to develop concrete plans to enable meaningful learning in your courses. You will leave this workshop with a better understanding of how to convey your own boundaries around AI use in your classroom activities.

Professor Peter Felten is executive director of the Center for Engaged Learning, professor of history, and assistant provost for teaching and learning at Elon University. He has published seven books about undergraduate education, including Connections are Everything: A College Student’s Guide to Relationship-Rich Education (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2023) co-authored by Isis Artze-Vega, Leo Lambert, and Oscar Miranda Tapia. He is on the advisory board of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and is a fellow of the Gardner Institute.
*Peter Felten will be the keynote speaker at UVM’s 2025 SoTL Symposium.
