Metacognition in the Classroom (Online Session)

Thursday, September 29, 2022 @ 8:30 am - 9:30 am

Free

We don’t expect our students to be content-experts when they enter our classrooms, but we sometimes expect them to be learning experts. Deep and effective learning is something that needs to be made explicit and taught. Without such instruction, many students utilize ineffective techniques that lead to frustration and surface-level learning. However, even teaching certain techniques may not change student behavior; they may not buy-in or be invested in unlearning old habits. Metacognition is an important key to unlocking students’ engagement in their learning processes. During this session, the CTL will share a range of approaches for empowering students to activate metacognition for deep learning. Many interventions are small and brief (they may take 5 minutes of class time); other strategies may inspire you to rethink aspects of your curriculum design.

Facilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller, CTL Educational Developer
