SUMMARY:Brightspace Assignments Lab (Online Session)
DESCRIPTION:This session\, led by CTL staff\, is a follow-up to the D2L-led session\, “Introduction to Brightspace Assignment.” A video recording of the D2L session will be available in the event description on the Brightspace Trainings page. \nWe’re calling this session a lab because you can take part in step-by-step activities in your sandboxes and ask questions. We’ll invite you to experiment with adding assignments and to see how grading works. We’ll work as a group to answer each other’s questions. \n**These Brightspace Labs events are geared towards participants who have spent time experimenting in their sandbox courses or attended a Desire to Lean (D2L) led webinar. If you are completely new to the Brightspace environment\, these Labs may not be the best match for you. They will be at a faster pace and assume familiarity with the interface.** \nPlease reserve this time on your calendar. You will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the day before your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.

SUMMARY:Keeping It Real in College: Building Case Studies for STEM Courses Based on Real-World Problems (In-Person Session)
DESCRIPTION:Using the UMass Amherst’s ICons Innovation Cycle of Inception\, (Engagement\, Research\, Create\, Reflect)\, participants will begin to design case study assignments around real-world problems. Working in small groups\, participants will apply the cycle in aligning learning objectives to the assignment and consider what instructional scaffolding is necessary to support student learning. Finally\, we will discuss assessment strategies including genre deconstruction\, student-driven rubrics\, and self- and peer-assessment. This workshop is facilitated by Dr. Scott Auerbach\, professor of chemistry at UMass Amherst. \nIn addition to the nuts and bolts of of using the iCon Cycle framework\, Dr. Auerbach discusses the benefits and possibilities of using real-world problems to reach important student learning objectives and ways to encourage STEM students to learn about the world around them. \nDr. Auerbach’s research focuses on simulating nanostructured materials important to renewable energy technologies including biofuels and fuel cells. Dr. Auerbach is the founder and the Mahoney Family Sponsored executive director of the Integrated Concentration in STEM (iCons) Program\, which challenges STEM and Business students to design solutions for societal problems in renewable energy and biomedicine. In 2016\, Auerbach won the inaugural Manning Prize for Teaching Excellence; and in 2017 Auerbach won the UMass Distinguished Teaching Award. \nThis event is presented by the College of Engineering and Mathematical Science. \nThis meeting will be held IN-PERSON in Innovation Hall\, E204. You will receive a reminder prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Writing or Content? I Don't Have Time for Both! (In-Person Session)
DESCRIPTION:Are you worried that working on writing skills with students will take time away from content you want to cover in your course? It doesn’t have to be either/or; writing assignments can be a way of covering\, reinforcing\, and practicing content! In this workshop we’ll explore strategies for designing writing assignments that help students learn important concepts while developing disciplinary ways of thinking\, communicating\, and writing.  \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, WID Director \nThis meeting will be held IN-PERSON in 302 Howe Memorial Library (WID Conference Room). You will receive a reminder prior to the event.
