SUMMARY:Brightspace Quiz Lab (Online Session)
DESCRIPTION:This session\, led by CTL staff\, is a follow-up to the D2L-led session\, “Introduction to Brightspace Quizzes.” A video recording of the D2L session will be available in the event description on the Brightspace Trainings page. \nAs we dive deeper into the quiz feature\, we’ll invite you to experiment with adding and importing questions. If people are interested\, we’ll talk about how to import questions from Word. We will demonstrate how quiz grading works and what feedback looks like from the student perspective. And since we are still learning the Brightspace nuances\, we may also problem-solve as a group. \n**These Brightspace Labs events are geared towards participants who have spent time experimenting in their sandbox courses or attended a Desire to Lean (D2L) led webinar. If you are completely new to the Brightspace environment\, these Labs may not be the best match for you. They will be at a faster pace and assume familiarity with the interface.** \nPlease reserve this time on your calendar. You will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the day before your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.

SUMMARY:Writing or Content? I Don't Have Time for Both! (In-Person Session)
DESCRIPTION:Are you worried that working on writing skills with students will take time away from content you want to cover in your course? It doesn’t have to be either/or; writing assignments can be a way of covering\, reinforcing\, and practicing content! In this workshop we’ll explore strategies for designing writing assignments that help students learn important concepts while developing disciplinary ways of thinking\, communicating\, and writing.  \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, WID Director \nThis meeting will be held IN-PERSON in 302 Howe Memorial Library (WID Conference Room). You will receive a reminder prior to the event.

SUMMARY:What to Say When? Timing Feedback for Writers (In-Person Session)
DESCRIPTION:If most of the energy spent on responding to student writing happens at the end of the semester\, its impact may be limited. Yet the alternative – multiple drafts of assignments\, each with feedback – is often not sustainable. Explore ways to evaluate when feedback and response is possible\, with an eye toward creating a rhythm that works.  \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, WID Director \nThis meeting will be held IN-PERSON in 302 Howe Memorial Library (WID Conference Room). SUMMARY:Metacognition in the Classroom (Online Session)
DESCRIPTION:We don’t expect our students to be content-experts when they enter our classrooms\, but we sometimes expect them to be learning experts. Deep and effective learning is something that needs to be made explicit and taught. Without such instruction\, many students utilize ineffective techniques that lead to frustration and surface-level learning. However\, even teaching certain techniques may not change student behavior; they may not buy-in or be invested in unlearning old habits. Metacognition is an important key to unlocking students’ engagement in their learning processes. During this session\, the CTL will share a range of approaches for empowering students to activate metacognition for deep learning. Many interventions are small and brief (they may take 5 minutes of class time); other strategies may inspire you to rethink aspects of your curriculum design. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller\, CTL Educational Developer \nPlease reserve this time on your personal calendar. You will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.

SUMMARY:Creating Custom Images for your Classes – An Introduction to BioRender (In-Person Session)
DESCRIPTION:A picture can say a thousand words\, but it can be challenging to find or create images that say the right “thousand words” and sometimes you really just want to say a hundred.  Importantly\, using concise\, consistent images (e.g. colors; styles) reduces students’ extraneous cognitive loads – mental energy spent ignoring parts of images not relevant to the discussion\, orienting themselves to new color patterns\, etc.  This workshop will focus on using BioRender\, an image creation tool free through the Howe Library that’s focused on the life sciences\, to create your own figures for your class.  Beyond the basic how to’s\, we’ll look at situations where other image tools may be more useful and there will be time for you to start working on your own image. \nFacilitated by Laura Almstead\, Senior Lecturer in Plant Biology \nPlease reserve this time on your calendar. This IN-PERSON event will take place in 303 Howe Memorial Library.
