SUMMARY:Bad Ideas About Writing – What They are and Why they Persist
DESCRIPTION:Writers are born\, not made.  Citing sources is easy. The passive voice should be avoided. Texting is killing writing.  Good writers are successful in every context. These are just some of the bad ideas about writing that get in the way of learning (and teaching). In this workshop\, we’ll talk about common misconceptions about writing; we’ll also discuss disciplinary notions of writing.  We’ll use participant experiences to identify strategies for replacing bad ideas about writing with better ones.  \nThis meeting will be held IN-PERSON in 302 Howe Memorial Library (WID Conference Room). You will receive a reminder prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Creating Custom Images for your Classes – An Introduction to BioRender (In-Person Session)
DESCRIPTION:A picture can say a thousand words\, but it can be challenging to find or create images that say the right “thousand words” and sometimes you really just want to say a hundred.  Importantly\, using concise\, consistent images (e.g. colors; styles) reduces students’ extraneous cognitive loads – mental energy spent ignoring parts of images not relevant to the discussion\, orienting themselves to new color patterns\, etc.  This workshop will focus on using BioRender\, an image creation tool free through the Howe Library that’s focused on the life sciences\, to create your own figures for your class.  Beyond the basic how to’s\, we’ll look at situations where other image tools may be more useful and there will be time for you to start working on your own image. \nFacilitated by Laura Almstead\, Senior Lecturer in Plant Biology \nPlease reserve this time on your calendar. This IN-PERSON event will take place in 303 Howe Memorial Library.

SUMMARY:Fall Faculty Groups "Teaser" Session
DESCRIPTION:If you enjoy meeting with faculty colleagues for discussion and exploration of teaching ideas\, you might be interested in participating in one of several faculty groups hosted by the CTL and/or WID this fall. \nIn this short “teaser” session we’ll briefly introduce the following groups: \n\nCourse/curriculum design groups:\nAlt Grading: Explore non-traditional options for giving feedback\, promoting student reflection\, and increasing student engagement. These alternative methods of assessment will help students set goals for their own learning in your course. (Commitment = 1 semester\, ~4-6 sessions) \nTILT: Share assignments with colleagues and use a structured framework that increases student success for creating transparency about your assignment’s requirements and standards. (Commitment: ~6 Teams meetings for peer feedback sessions over 1 semester.) \nBook group:\nAsao Inoue’s Above the Well: upend your assumptions about “good” language use and engage with a call to do anti-racist work around language on campus\, in your classrooms\, and beyond. (Commitment: 4 meetings in the fall) \nPeer reflection and support group:\nReflective Practice in Community: (GTA group and Faculty group) Build community with a small group (~4 people) throughout the semester. Groups will use guided written reflection prompts\, with time for conversations about the reflective process and new insights gained as a result of this important work. \nResearch group:\nScholarship of Teaching and Learning: Develop your teaching related research ideas with colleagues from across campus. We will meet as a group to share ideas\, progress and work together to support the research process in community. \n\nIf you’re interested in joining a group but can’t attend this session\, just let us know. Meetings are scheduled around participants’ availability. \nThis session facilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, Director of the Center for Teaching & Learning and Writing in the Disciplines\, and Jen Garrett-Ostermiller and Holly Parker\, CTL Educational Developers. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting. SUMMARY:The Power of Transparent Assignment Design
DESCRIPTION:This workshop presents an overview of Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (TILT)\, an award-winning\, scholarly project focused on improving students’ learning experiences. Evidence from a national study shows that when faculty implement small changes to enhance transparency to the design of even just two assignments\, there are statistically significant benefits for all students and even larger gains for first-generation students\, low-income students\, and students of color (Winkelmes et al.\, 2016). In this workshop\, we’ll share examples and a simple framework for transparent assignment design—Purpose\, Task\, Criteria. You’ll be able to start the groundwork to “TILT” two of your own assignments. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller and Susanmarie Harrington. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:iClicker Student Response System: Engaging Your Students in Their Own Learning
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we discuss how teaching with the iClicker Student Response System can enhance student engagement and understanding\, especially in large enrollment courses. Faculty can now use the iClicker app to poll students and get instant feedback on whether students understand concepts presented during lecture and in pre-class readings. UVM has a site license for the iClicker Student App as of Fall 2021. \nThis workshop also covers the technical aspects of using iClicker Cloud\, the preferred instructor software for administering iClicker polls and grades. There will be opportunities for attendees to ask additional questions. iClicker Cloud supports a variety of question types\, and is entirely based in the cloud for easy administration. iClicker Cloud also supports hand-held iClicker remotes. \nFacilitated by Holly Buckland Parker. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Yellowdig: An Alternative Discussion Tool
DESCRIPTION:Yellowdig is an alternative to Blackboard’s discussion board tool. In form and substance\, it works much like social media platforms\, supporting text and video posts as well as allowing participants to use likes or emojis to react to posts and comments. It provides flexible ways for the class community to interact. \nIn this session\, you will learn about Yellowdig’s features and Blackboard integration (e.g.\, no additional logging in and participation data transfer to the Grade Center\, if desired). Participants will leave the workshop able to decide whether Yellowdig or Blackboard best serves their course goals. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, Writing in the Disciplines\, and Holly Buckland Parker\, Center for Teaching and Learning \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Perusall: A Social Reader and Annotation Tool
DESCRIPTION:Perusall is a collaborative annotation tool that integrates with Blackboard (meaning no separate login is needed). Students can engage with a variety of course materials (readings\, videos\, podcasts\, websites\, student-generated documents)—in whole-class or in small groups—to collectively react\, question\, and discuss. \nPerusall has been shown to increase pre-class reading significantly (greater than 90% of students consistently complete readings in classes using this tool). The software generates a “confusion report” for instructors\, highlighting areas of the content that may warrant deeper in-class discussion\, as well as an instructor-facing analytics report that enables auto-grading of assignments. This workshop will blend an overview\, hands-on experience with the software\, and guidance for use. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller\, CTL Educational Developer. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Making Your Syllabus Work for You and Your Students
DESCRIPTION:A well-designed syllabus is more than a way to explain your course to students. A good syllabus thoughtfully connects your assignments\, activities\, and assessments to course goals\, thus preparing you for more effective and efficient grading through the semester. A good syllabus also supports students\, a matter we will consider through a lens of inclusion and equity.  During this workshop\, you’ll begin editing your syllabus and will leave with a plan for final revisions that use your new ideas about how the content and language of a syllabus can serve you and your students. \nDuring the first half\, our focus will be on how well your syllabus serves your core goals and makes explicit connections between those course goals and your other assignments and activities. By taking time now to solidify these connections using principles of backwards design\, you set yourself up for easier grading and responding later in the semester.  \nDuring the second half\, we’ll explore how your syllabus welcomes students\, whether it connects with students as the you had hoped\, how it can either demystify or complicate students understanding of the course and campus supports\, and how it serves student inclusion and equity. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, Center for Teaching and Learning & Writing in the Disciplines\, & Holly Buckland Parker\, Center for Teaching and Learning \nThis event is IN-PERSON. You will receive a reminder a day or two before the event.

SUMMARY:Planning Your TAP Course
DESCRIPTION:New this year\, a Planning Your TAP Course workshop offers a one-day\, in-person experience focused specifically on the TAP program\, May 25th\, 9:30-3. We’ll look at how the TAP program has evolved now that CAS has professional advisors\, reflect on the four FWIL (Foundational Writing and Information Literacy) outcomes to see how your course assignments and activities can prepare students for further writing adventures\, and think about how to construct assignments that are meaningful for first-year students in your course context.  Opportunities to consult with librarians will be available\, and you can expect to leave the day with a solid outline for your fall course. (This will be held on-campus\, location TBD; refreshments provided.) \nRegister for Planning Your TAP Course today!

SUMMARY:Project-Based Learning Primer
DESCRIPTION:This session introduces you to project-based learning via a participatory exercise\, illustrating the design and scaffolding of a student project experience.  Working in small groups\, we will work through the initial steps of a project and reflect on its educational design and strategies.  From there we will examine sample project assignments all with an eye to developing an understanding of what it takes to create high quality experiential learning opportunities for our students.  We will close by sharing strategies to overcome the hurdle of adding projects to courses that already keep students and faculty busy. \nThis workshop is facilitated by Dr. Kristin Wobbe\, director of Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Center for Project-Based Learning. Read more about her and the center on this CTL page.
\nIn this workshop\, we’ll share examples and a simple framework for transparent assignment design—Purpose\, Task\, Criteria.
