SUMMARY:The National Survey of Student Engagement: Using UVM Student Data To Inform Teaching
DESCRIPTION:UVM has administered the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) every three years since 2005\, but the survey and its data have not previously been shared in faculty-to-faculty conversations about teaching practices. We at the CTL feel that student responses could prove useful for guiding programming to support faculty development. The role of this session is to introduce faculty to the survey and most recent set of findings in order to gather initial impressions of the data and its potential uses for faculty. Please join us at one of these sessions to learn more about NSSE and give us your thoughts! \nFacilitated by Laura Almstead\, Eva Cosoroaba\, Mary Burke\, and Wendy Berenback. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Why Assign 15 Pages When 5 Will Do?
DESCRIPTION:With their focus on quality over quantity\, shorter writing assignments increase student precision\, reduce fluff\, discourage procrastination\, and strengthen writing skills. When paired with in-class peer-review activities\, using sentence outlines\, and some limited coaching\, the result is stronger and shorter papers that allow you to spend less time grading and responding. During this virtual workshop\, we will look at these and other strategies to meet your assignment goals in fewer pages. Participants are welcome to bring one of their existing ‘long’ writing assignments. \nFacilitated by Ingrid Nelson\, Associate Professor of Geography & WID Faculty Associate \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Wicked Course Design – A Workshop Series (Session One)
DESCRIPTION:Identifying Wicked Problems for Wicked Students\nDuring this session\, we’ll identify some of the wicked problems in our fields\, those problems that are too large for one individual to solve and that require our students to think unconventionally. We’ll reflect on how we can foster the skills our students need to solve wicked problems\, specifically\, how we can shift a course’s purpose from sharing a body of knowledge\, to creating opportunities for students to actively build and apply skills to solve the wicked problems in their fields. \nRead an overview of the series and download the book on which the series is based\, Creating Wicked Students : Designing Courses for a Complex World\, by Paul Hanstedt (2018). \nCo-facilitated by Eva Cosoroaba and Kelly Becker\, CTL Faculty Associates \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access.

SUMMARY:Promoting Equity and Inclusion Through Writing Assignment Design and Feedback Practices
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive session\, we will explore how to design\, scaffold\, and respond to writing assignments in ways that are in line with our commitments to equity and inclusion. We will see examples of writing assignments across disciplines that draw out the assets of multilingual and international writers\, and will review strategies that can ensure that all of our students are set up for success throughout the writing process. We will then consider how to respond to and evaluate student writing in ways that are both effective and affirming for writers of all language backgrounds. Throughout the discussion\, we will reference the framework of Critical Language Awareness\, an approach to writing instruction that prioritizes students’ self-reflection and rhetorical agency\, and promotes social justice in the academy and beyond. There will be opportunities for Q/A at multiple points in the session. \nThis workshop is facilitated by Shawna Shapiro\, associate professor of writing and linguistics and Director of Middlebury College’s Writing and Rhetoric Program. Her research focuses on college transitions and innovative writing pedagogies\, especially for international and immigrant-background students. Her 2022 book\, Cultivating Critical Language Awareness in the Writing Classroom\, is published by Routledge.

SUMMARY:Designing Assignments for Easy Response - Set Yourself Up for Success!
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores how intentional design and communication of writing assignment goals\, expectations\, and instructions can set you up for easy responding and commenting. We’ll consider ways to tweak assignments to better convey this information to students\, and we’ll think together about how your assignment sheet can become the framework for your later response.  Bring an assignment of your own that you would like to improve upon!  \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, Director of Writing in the Disciplines \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access.

SUMMARY:Increasing Student Motivation: Strategies that Work
DESCRIPTION:Motivating today’s students to actively engage in learning activities proves challenging for most faculty. Very often Gen Z students do not respond as did students in the past to extrinsic motivators such as bonus quizzes and extra credit assignments. However\, as James Raffini presents in 150 Ways to Increase Intrinsic Motivation in the Classroom\, when the psychoacademic needs of students are met in creative ways\, student motivation soars.  This workshop will engage faculty in a discussion about addressing student needs for autonomy\, competence\, relatedness\, self-esteem\, and enjoyment in order to significantly increase student motivation. \nThis workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Saundra McGuire\, author of Teach Students How to Learn. Dr. McGuire\, Director Emerita of Louisiana State University’s Center for Academic Success\, is a chemist and educator who has presented around the world on the science of learning. She has a particular interest in supporting underrepresented students in math and STEM fields\, but her work on metacognition and motivation has applications in every field. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access.

SUMMARY:Teach Students How to Learn: Metacognition is the Key!
DESCRIPTION:Students come to college with widely varying academic skills\, approaches to learning\, and motivation levels. Faculty often lament that students are focused on achieving high grades\, but are not willing to invest much time or effort in learning. This session will focus on the importance of helping students acquire simple\, but effective\, learning strategies based on cognitive science principles. We will engage in interactive reflection activities that will allow attendees to experience strategies that can significantly improve student success by transforming students’ attitudes about the meaning of learning. SUMMARY:Student Perspectives on Instructor Feedback
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why students’ revisions seem to ignore the comments you so laboriously wrote? Are you interested in helping your students understand and use your comments? During this session\, we will watch and reflect on the 8-minute film\, Beyond the Red Ink\, featuring seven students who talk “openly about the role teachers’ comments have played in their lives as college writers and offer their own advice\, in their own words to writing teachers.” The film will be followed by a look at some UVM students’ thoughts on instructor responses and a discussion with colleagues. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, WID Director \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:The Power of Transparent Assignment Design
DESCRIPTION:This workshop presents an overview of Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (TILT)\, an award-winning\, scholarly project focused on improving students’ learning experiences. Evidence from a national study shows that when faculty implement small changes to enhance transparency to the design of even just two assignments\, there are statistically significant benefits for all students and even larger gains for first-generation students\, low-income students\, and students of color (Winkelmes et al.\, 2016). \nIn this workshop\, we’ll share examples and a simple framework for transparent assignment design—Purpose\, Task\, Criteria. You’ll be able to start the groundwork to “TILT” two of your own assignments. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller and Susanmarie Harrington. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!
