SUMMARY:Increasing Student Motivation: Strategies that Work
DESCRIPTION:Motivating today’s students to actively engage in learning activities proves challenging for most faculty. Very often Gen Z students do not respond as did students in the past to extrinsic motivators such as bonus quizzes and extra credit assignments. However\, as James Raffini presents in 150 Ways to Increase Intrinsic Motivation in the Classroom\, when the psychoacademic needs of students are met in creative ways\, student motivation soars.  This workshop will engage faculty in a discussion about addressing student needs for autonomy\, competence\, relatedness\, self-esteem\, and enjoyment in order to significantly increase student motivation. \nThis workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Saundra McGuire\, author of Teach Students How to Learn. Dr. McGuire\, Director Emerita of Louisiana State University’s Center for Academic Success\, is a chemist and educator who has presented around the world on the science of learning. She has a particular interest in supporting underrepresented students in math and STEM fields\, but her work on metacognition and motivation has applications in every field. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access.

SUMMARY:Teach STEM Students How to Learn: Metacognition is the Key!
DESCRIPTION:All STEM students who are admitted to the institution have the ability to succeed in STEM courses. However\, most do not have effective learning strategies and resort to memorizing information just before tests. \nThis interactive workshop will introduce faculty to cognitive science research-based learning strategies that will help all students experience meaningful\, transferable learning. \nThe session will focus on ways to teach STEM students simple yet powerful learning strategies to ensure success in STEM courses. \nThis workshop is part of the Kroepsch-Maurice Faculty Development and Lecture Series. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access.

SUMMARY:Teach Students How to Learn: Metacognition is the Key!
DESCRIPTION:Students come to college with widely varying academic skills\, approaches to learning\, and motivation levels. Faculty often lament that students are focused on achieving high grades\, but are not willing to invest much time or effort in learning. This session will focus on the importance of helping students acquire simple\, but effective\, learning strategies based on cognitive science principles. We will engage in interactive reflection activities that will allow attendees to experience strategies that can significantly improve student success by transforming students’ attitudes about the meaning of learning. \nThis workshop is part of the Kroepsch-Maurice Faculty Development and Lecture Series. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting. SUMMARY:Student Perspectives on Instructor Feedback
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why students’ revisions seem to ignore the comments you so laboriously wrote? Are you interested in helping your students understand and use your comments? During this session\, we will watch and reflect on the 8-minute film\, Beyond the Red Ink\, featuring seven students who talk “openly about the role teachers’ comments have played in their lives as college writers and offer their own advice\, in their own words to writing teachers.” The film will be followed by a look at some UVM students’ thoughts on instructor responses and a discussion with colleagues. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, WID Director \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:The Power of Transparent Assignment Design
DESCRIPTION:This workshop presents an overview of Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (TILT)\, an award-winning\, scholarly project focused on improving students’ learning experiences. Evidence from a national study shows that when faculty implement small changes to enhance transparency to the design of even just two assignments\, there are statistically significant benefits for all students and even larger gains for first-generation students\, low-income students\, and students of color (Winkelmes et al.\, 2016). \nIn this workshop\, we’ll share examples and a simple framework for transparent assignment design—Purpose\, Task\, Criteria. You’ll be able to start the groundwork to “TILT” two of your own assignments. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller and Susanmarie Harrington. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Conversations with Student Services: Creating Student-Faculty Partnerships for a Manageable Semester
DESCRIPTION:This pandemic has impacted our lives\, our work\, and our classrooms. As we start a new semester\, it can be helpful to reflect on experiences and lessons we’ve learned from past semesters. Come join us for a roundtable discussion with student services staff from across the University to discuss issues impacting our students and to think about ways to make this semester manageable and sustainable for ourselves and our students. Individual faculty and student services staff often connect over specific cases\, but we rarely have the opportunity to converse more generally and to share experiences and insights. This roundtable discussion will be facilitated by a CTL faculty associate and will feature members of student services staff from several different colleges. All faculty and staff are invited to join us. \nRoundtable participants: Mary C. Burke\, CTL faculty associate\, Senior Lecturer (CAS) Matt Manz\, Director of Undergraduate Student Services (CEMS) Whitney N. Northrop\, Associate Director of Student Services (CALS) Katie Tyler\, Student Service Coordinator (CAS) Meghan “MJ” Jaird\, Director of Student Services and Retention (CESS) Meghan Young\, Associate Director of Student Services & Retention\, Academic Advisor (CESS)

SUMMARY:January Mindfulness Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day-long retreat to connect with colleagues and students who are interested in exploring mindfulness practices. No prior experience is necessary\, and all are welcome! \nThis retreat is an opportunity to sink deeply into a variety of individual and relational mindfulness practices with guidance and encouragement. The community of participants will be composed of faculty who are interested in mindfulness practices in and out of the classroom and also undergraduate students who are participating in UVM’s Mindfulness’ facilitator training program. \nHere’s the flow of activities for the day:\nWe will all be together for morning meditation practices (instruction will be provided)\, and then participants will have a choice to eat lunch in community or in silence. After lunch\, we’ll move into group activities (a choice of gentle yoga\, loving kindness practice\, music movement) that are designed for faculty only\, and then we’ll come back together as a whole group for the closing. \nAll activities\, including time to be in dialogue with each other\, are optional. \nWhile registration is closed\, please email Wendy at wverreib@uvm.edu to see if attending is possible. While there is physical space\, we needed to submit the lunch order. If you are interested in attending\, we’ll see if we can add to it. \nThis event will be facilitated by the UVM Wellness Center and the CTL Contemplative Faculty Learning Community.

SUMMARY:Perusall: A Social Reader and Annotation Tool
DESCRIPTION:Perusall is a collaborative annotation tool that integrates with Blackboard (meaning no separate login is needed). Perusall has been shown to increase pre-class reading significantly (greater than 90% of students consistently complete readings in classes using this tool). Students—in small groups up to 20—can collectively mark up readings with threaded questions and comments. \nThe software generates a “confusion report” for instructors\, highlighting areas of the text that may warrant deeper in-class discussion\, as well as an instructor-facing analytics report that enables grading of reading assignments. Perusall also has a feature that allows for collaborative annotation of instructor-created or publicly accessible videos. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller\, CTL Faculty Development Specialist. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Faculty Roundtable: Teaching the Hidden Curriculum & Promoting Student Support Resources with the Center for Academic Success
DESCRIPTION:Knowing how to “do college” is part of the “hidden curriculum.” Some students are savvy to the habits and behaviors that lead to academic success and others are not. These inequities may not be transparent: struggling students generally do not have a window into their successful peers’ study habits; instructors do not witness the disparities in how students are spending time on coursework outside of the classroom. And\, of course\, the differences in understanding these norms and expectations are rooted in broader inequities related to access\, preparation\, and mentorship. When unaddressed\, inequities perpetuate and snowball. \nAt the classroom level\, interventions to address these inequities include teaching the hidden curriculum and structuring the course to support development of these skills and habits. At UVM\, students can access individual support through the Center for Academic Success (CFAS). This session will begin with a short presentation of opportunities available through CFAS\, concluding with a roundtable discussion of how to support all students through the lens of teaching the hidden curriculum. \nFacilitated by Dani Comey\, Christian Berry\, Sharon Mone\, Susanmarie Harrington\, & Jen Garrett-Ostermiller. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Yellowdig: An Alternative Discussion Tool
DESCRIPTION:Yellowdig is an alternative to Blackboard’s discussion board tool. In form and substance\, it works much like social media platforms\, supporting text and video posts as well as allowing participants to use likes or emojis to react to posts and comments. It provides flexible ways for the class community to interact. \nIn this session\, you will learn about Yellowdig’s features and Blackboard integration (e.g.\, no additional logging in and participation data transfer to the Grade Center\, if desired). Participants will leave the workshop able to decide whether Yellowdig or Blackboard best serves their course goals. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, Writing in the Disciplines\, and Holly Buckland Parker\, Center for Teaching and Learning \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Making Your Syllabus Work for You and Your Students
DESCRIPTION:A well-designed syllabus is more than a way to explain your course to students. A good syllabus thoughtfully connects your assignments\, activities\, and assessments to course goals\, thus preparing you for more effective and efficient grading through the semester. A good syllabus also supports students\, a matter we will consider through a lens of inclusion and equity.  During this workshop\, you’ll begin editing your syllabus and will leave with a plan for final revisions that use your new ideas about how the content and language of a syllabus can serve you and your students.  \nDuring the first half\, our focus will be on how well your syllabus serves your core goals and makes explicit connections between those course goals and your other assignments and activities. By taking time now to solidify these connections using principles of backwards design\, you set yourself up for easier grading and responding later in the semester.   \nDuring the second half\, we’ll explore how your syllabus welcomes students\, whether it connects with students as the you had hoped\, how it can either demystify or complicate students understanding of the course and campus supports\, and how it serves student inclusion and equity. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, Center for Teaching and Learning & Writing in the Disciplines\, & Holly Buckland Parker\, Center for Teaching and Learning \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Blackboard Grade Center
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will show you how to set up the Blackboard Grade Center to make it work for you and keep students informed about their current grades. We’ll also show you how to verify its weighted grade calculations and how to troubleshoot problems. \nThe Grade Center is essentially a spreadsheet that can be customized to calculate your students’ weighted grades as they proceed through the course. It’s tied to the tools you’ve set up in your course for graded assignments\, it can also include columns for grades that are not linked to Blackboard tools. It’s a robust tool that provides many grading features\, such as grouping like-assignments in order to drop the lowest grade. \nFacilitated by Inés Berrizbeitia. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!
