SUMMARY:Perusall: a Social Reader and Annotation Tool
DESCRIPTION:Perusall is a collaborative annotation tool that integrates with Blackboard (meaning no separate login is needed). Perusall has been shown to increase pre-class reading significantly (greater than 90% of students consistently complete readings in classes using this tool). Students—in small groups up to 20—can collectively mark up readings with threaded questions and comments. \nThe software generates a “confusion report” for instructors\, highlighting areas of the text that may warrant deeper in-class discussion\, as well as an instructor-facing analytics report that enables grading of reading assignments. Perusall also has a feature that allows for collaborative annotation of instructor-created or publicly accessible videos. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller\, CTL Faculty Development Specialist. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:iClicker Student Response System
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we demonstrate how teaching with iClicker can enhance student engagement\, especially in large enrollment courses. Faculty can use clickers to poll students and get instant feedback on whether students understand concepts presented during lecture and in pre-class readings. \nThis workshop also covers the technical aspects of using iClicker (including comparison of “iClicker Cloud” and iClicker Classic”) and ideas for teaching with them. iClicker Cloud\, a relatively new product\, provides faculty with opportunities for asking additional question types\, can create flashcards for students based on in-class polls\, and is fully web-based. \nFacilitated by Holly Buckland-Parker. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Student Friendly and Interactive Syllabi
DESCRIPTION:A syllabus is an important part of students’ first impression of you and your course. It outlines the semester’s major work\, describes course goals\, your policies\, and some relevant university policies…but how many syllabi end up looking like long legalistic documents that students won’t read? This workshop introduces some simple principles for making syllabi student-centered. \nAdditionally\, we’ll introduce the interactive syllabus\, a way of presenting your syllabus through a simple survey. This creates opportunities for students to interact with you and the syllabus–and perhaps even contribute to the syllabus. We’ll explore several options\, both thematically and technologically\, for using an interactive syllabus\, including starting from a template to reduce your workload. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller and Susanmarie Harrington. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Yellowdig: An Alternative Discussion Tool
DESCRIPTION:Yellowdig is an alternative to Blackboard’s discussion board tool. In form and substance\, it works much like social media platforms\, supporting text and video posts as well as allowing participants to use likes or emojis to react to posts and comments. It provides flexible ways for the class community to interact. \nIn this session\, you will learn about Yellowdig’s features and Blackboard integration (e.g.\, no additional logging in and participation data transfer to the Grade Center\, if desired). Participants will leave the workshop able to decide whether Yellowdig or Blackboard best serves their course goals. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington\, Writing in the Disciplines\, and Holly Buckland Parker\, Center for Teaching and Learning \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Inhale: Reflecting & Connecting as We Begin Another Pandemic Semester
DESCRIPTION:As the fall semester starts\, we all return to campus changed by the pandemic. Last spring\, we held a session to exhale together and make sense of how the pandemic had changed us and our teaching. We heard themes of flexibility and compassion\, for students and ourselves. With classes about to start\, let’s come together and inhale\, entering the semester with connection\, peer support\, and intentional reflection. How are you implementing lessons learned from the past year? What are you feeling as you think about engaging with your classes in-person? What approaches are you excited to try? What questions are percolating in this new phase of the pandemic? Come prepared to listen\, share\, reflect\, and inhale with colleagues. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington and Jen Garrett-Ostermiller. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:The Power of Transparent Assignment Design
DESCRIPTION:This workshop presents an overview of Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (TILT)\, an award-winning\, scholarly project focused on improving students’ learning experiences. Evidence from a national study shows that when faculty implement small changes to enhance transparency to the design of even just two assignments\, there are statistically significant benefits for all students and even larger gains for first-generation students\, low-income students\, and students of color (Winkelmes et al.\, 2016). \nIn this workshop\, we’ll share examples and a simple framework for transparent assignment design—Purpose\, Task\, Criteria. You’ll be able to start the groundwork to “TILT” two of your own assignments.

SUMMARY:Catamount Core Common Ground Values Courses: Understanding D1\, D2\, and Global Citizenship Pathway 1 (GC1) Courses
DESCRIPTION:Participants will receive off-contract pay at the half-day rate for participating in the workshop. \nDuring this workshop\, we will be helping faculty to prepare submissions for new courses or revise existing courses to meet the updated criteria for the diversity/common ground curriculum. \nThis workshop will focus on D1 (race and racism in the US)\, D2 (diversity of the human experience) and GC (global citizenship) courses. We will review the new and revised criteria for these courses and work on designing syllabi that clearly communicate the course learning objectives\, key assignments\, and how you will assess student progress towards course learning objectives. Participants should be considering submitting course proposals for consideration by the Catamount Core Curriculum Committee for Fall 2021; successful courses submissions will be added to the Catamount Core curriculum for Fall 2022. \nThese Catamount Core workshops are supported by a grant from the Davis Educational Foundation to support building course capacity in the Catamount Core\, and by Provost’s Office. Followup support for preparing the course proposal for submission will be provided in the Fall semester. \nSpace is limited. Please register ASAP. \nFacilitated by Pablo Bose\, Provost’s Faculty Fellow for the Catamount Core\, chair of the Diversity Curriculum Review Committee (DCRC) and chair of the Catamount Core Curriculum Committee. \nEmail questions to Pablo.Bose@uvm.edu.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Perusall: a Social Reader and Annotation Tool
DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been cancelled. Please see the same listing for August 27th. \nPerusall is a collaborative annotation tool that integrates with Blackboard (meaning no separate login is needed).
