SUMMARY:Inhale: Reflecting & Connecting as We Begin Another Pandemic Semester
DESCRIPTION:As the fall semester starts\, we all return to campus changed by the pandemic. Last spring\, we held a session to exhale together and make sense of how the pandemic had changed us and our teaching. We heard themes of flexibility and compassion\, for students and ourselves. With classes about to start\, let’s come together and inhale\, entering the semester with connection\, peer support\, and intentional reflection. How are you implementing lessons learned from the past year? What are you feeling as you think about engaging with your classes in-person? What approaches are you excited to try? What questions are percolating in this new phase of the pandemic? Come prepared to listen\, share\, reflect\, and inhale with colleagues. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington and Jen Garrett-Ostermiller. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:The Power of Transparent Assignment Design
DESCRIPTION:This workshop presents an overview of Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (TILT)\, an award-winning\, scholarly project focused on improving students’ learning experiences. Evidence from a national study shows that when faculty implement small changes to enhance transparency to the design of even just two assignments\, there are statistically significant benefits for all students and even larger gains for first-generation students\, low-income students\, and students of color (Winkelmes et al.\, 2016). \nIn this workshop\, we’ll share examples and a simple framework for transparent assignment design—Purpose\, Task\, Criteria. You’ll be able to start the groundwork to “TILT” two of your own assignments. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller and Susanmarie Harrington. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Catamount Core Common Ground Values Courses: Understanding D1\, D2\, and Global Citizenship Pathway 1 (GC1) Courses
DESCRIPTION:Participants will receive off-contract pay at the half-day rate for participating in the workshop. \nDuring this workshop\, we will be helping faculty to prepare submissions for new courses or revise existing courses to meet the updated criteria for the diversity/common ground curriculum. \nThis workshop will focus on D1 (race and racism in the US)\, D2 (diversity of the human experience) and GC (global citizenship) courses. We will review the new and revised criteria for these courses and work on designing syllabi that clearly communicate the course learning objectives\, key assignments\, and how you will assess student progress towards course learning objectives. Participants should be considering submitting course proposals for consideration by the Catamount Core Curriculum Committee for Fall 2021; successful courses submissions will be added to the Catamount Core curriculum for Fall 2022. \nThese Catamount Core workshops are supported by a grant from the Davis Educational Foundation to support building course capacity in the Catamount Core\, and by Provost’s Office. Followup support for preparing the course proposal for submission will be provided in the Fall semester. \nSpace is limited. Please register ASAP. \nFacilitated by Pablo Bose\, Provost’s Faculty Fellow for the Catamount Core\, chair of the Diversity Curriculum Review Committee (DCRC) and chair of the Catamount Core Curriculum Committee. \nEmail questions to Pablo.Bose@uvm.edu.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Perusall: a Social Reader and Annotation Tool
DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been cancelled. Please see the same listing for August 27th. \nPerusall is a collaborative annotation tool that integrates with Blackboard (meaning no separate login is needed). Perusall has been shown to increase pre-class reading significantly (greater than 90% of students consistently complete readings in classes using this tool). Students—in small groups up to 20—can collectively mark up readings with threaded questions and comments. \nThe software generates a “confusion report” for instructors\, highlighting areas of the text that may warrant deeper in-class discussion\, as well as an instructor-facing analytics report that enables grading of reading assignments. Perusall also has a feature that allows for collaborative annotation of instructor-created or publicly accessible videos. \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller\, CTL Faculty Development Specialist. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Blackboard Grade Center
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will show you how to set up the Blackboard Grade Center to make it work for you and keep students informed about their current grades. We’ll also show you how to verify its weighted grade calculations and how to troubleshoot problems. \nThe Grade Center is essentially a spreadsheet that can be customized to calculate your students’ weighted grades as they proceed through the course. It’s tied to the tools you’ve set up in your course for graded assignments\, it can also include columns for grades that are not linked to Blackboard tools. It’s a robust tool that provides many grading features\, such as grouping like-assignments in order to drop the lowest grade. \nFacilitated by Inés Berrizbeitia. \nYou will receive a Microsoft Teams calendar invitation the afternoon prior to your event explaining how to join and participate in the meeting.  If you click “accept\,” it will populate on your Teams calendar for easy access!

SUMMARY:Exhale ... Reflecting on 15 Months of Pandemic Teaching & Learning
DESCRIPTION:During this long\, 15-month pandemic\, we’ve been changed by our teaching and learning experiences; we’ve held it together (and sometimes fallen apart) for our students\, families\, colleagues\, friends\, and ourselves — it’s now time to EXHALE.  This session offers a space for collective reflection: making sense of how the pandemic has affected us and identifying what we hope to bring with us (or let go of) to be successful teachers moving forward with a more “normal” fall semester. Come prepared to listen\, share\, reflect\, and exhale with colleagues. \nFacilitated by Annie Murray-Close & Jen Garrett-Ostermiller\, Center for Teaching and Learning \n(This discussion is offered twice; you only need to sign up for one.) \nPlease reserve this time on you calendar.  We will send you a Teams invitation by the day prior to the event.

\nFacilitated by Annie Murray-Close & Jen Garrett-Ostermiller\, Center for Teaching and Learning and Susanmarie Harrington\, Writing in the Disciplines \n(This discussion is offered twice; you only need to sign up for one.) \nRegistration for this session has closed\, however\, we are holding another on 5/27!

SUMMARY:Teaching Effectively Online
DESCRIPTION:Teaching Effectively Online is a 4-week asynchronous online course (May 24 – June 18) that prepares faculty to teach online by exploring research-based best practices for designing courses\, providing practical experience with a variety of tools\, and perhaps most importantly\, by providing faculty the change in perspective—teachers become students\, a shift that is regularly described as game-changing. \nYour Blackboard course role will be student\, so you’re not expected to have expertise with Blackboard’s instructor tools. You just need a computer\, a good internet connection\, and a willingness to take part in new teaching and learning experiences. \nWhile TEO is offered as an asynchronous online course\, there will be optional one-hour live sessions held each week via MS Teams. \nLearn more about the program and view the TEO FAQs page.

SUMMARY:(Canceled) Writing-Intensive Teaching in a Pandemic: How’d it Go?
DESCRIPTION:Join us to reflect on our three semesters of experience with teaching writing-intensive mixed and remote courses. We’ll consider what worked for and challenged us and our students\, what working remotely has taught us about teaching writing in the disciplines\, and what questions or strategies we might carry forward. Though we’re still in the midst of challenging times\, we can learn with colleagues and leave with ideas for later semesters. \nFacilitated by Susanmarie Harrington \n(This event has been canceled.)

SUMMARY:Student Voices Panel: Reflections on Grading and Instructor Feedback
DESCRIPTION:11:30am-12:30pm – Student Voice Panel Discussion: Reflections on Grading and Instructor Feedback \nOne of the most time-intensive parts of teaching is responding to student work…but how do students process those responses and what do students value about your feedback? \nThis student panel\, composed of current UVM undergraduates\, will share student perspectives on grading and instructor feedback. The panelists will reflect on the experience and purpose of grading; the kinds of feedback they have received\, how feedback has been useful\, and not; and what faculty have done with feedback that promoted learning and confidence. \n12:30pm-1:00pm – Conversations with Colleagues: Reflections and Takeaways \nWhat did you learn from the student panelists? What ideas do you have to implement in your courses? What questions were raised that you’d like to think through with colleagues? \nFacilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller (CTL) and Susanmarie Harrington (WID)
